Williams Calls on SA to Support Sundowns
Bafana Bafana skipper, Ronwen Williams, is calling on all South Africans to support Mamelodi Sundowns when they take on Esperance de Tunis in their CAF Champions League semi-final tonight, Friday 26 April.
The reigning Premier Soccer League champions are scheduled to face the Tunisian outfit at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Gauteng – if Sundowns win, they will face either TP Mazembe or Al Ahly in the final.
In a pre-match conference on Thursday, 25 April, Williams – who is Sundowns’ top goalkeeper – called on the Rainbow Nation to come together and back the Brazilians, regardless of their footballing allegiances.
“I would urge South Africa as a whole to get behind us,” the 32-year-old told reporters in attendance. “We need each and everyone … we’re up there now with the best, so let Sundowns go all the way with your support. It’s only going to uplift South African football.”
He continued: “If you can put your personal clubs aside … we’re not only doing it for ourselves; we’re doing it for the next generation and the generations to come. They can also have something to look forward to, to be part of the Champions League, to dream big.”
Here’s hoping Mzansi will unite and support Sundowns tonight!
